Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

This class focuses on teaching workers, supervisors and managers how to recognize, assess, and control workplace hazards and risks to prevent injuries and illnesses. This course includes lectures, discussion, interactive tools, and hands-on inspections, to help students improve their hazard identification and risk assessment skills.  The class covers traditional hazard identification methods such as job hazard analysis (JHA’s) and walk around inspections coupled with the introduction of tools such as Take-2, pre-task planning, incident imaging, safety classification and learning model (SCL), the energy wheel and high energy control assessments (HECA).

Course Goal:

Develop and improve participants’ ability to systematically recognize and evaluate hazards and determine appropriate elimination or control measures.

Learning Objectives:

Define the fundamental concepts of hazard, risk, and control

Identify hazards and distinguish between different types of hazards, such as physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic

Apply hazard identification and risk assessment techniques through various activities.

Prioritize the identification of high energy exposures and the implementation of direct controls to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIF)
