Advanced Safety certificate (ASC)

The Advanced Safety Certificate® (ASC) is designed for safety professionals who already understand basic safety rules and regulations and are ready to take the next step. Once you know what the regulations are, this program helps you learn how to lead people and apply safety practices every day.

This nationally recognized program focuses on building leadership and communication skills that help you become a more effective safety leader. You will learn how to influence others, improve safety culture, and create real change throughout your organization.

The ASC moves beyond compliance and teaches practical, real-world skills. Participants learn how to solve problems, coach employees, and work with leadership to make safety a shared responsibility across the organization. This program gives you the tools and confidence to strengthen leadership skills, improve safety culture, and make lasting improvements that protect employees every day.

How to Earn an Advanced Safety Certificate

Complete the required POSH course and 5.2 CEUs of any of the elective courses listed below to earn your Advanced Safety Certificate.

Specialist in Safety and Health (SSH)

The Specialist in Safety & Health (SSH) certification program is intended to give the health and safety professional comprehensive knowledge of workplace hazards and an understanding of OSHA regulatory standards. These real-world courses help students immediately apply what they have learned within their own organizations.  Some of these courses can be applied toward the advanced level certification (CSHO).   The SSH allows students to concentrate their training on either Construction or General Industry building their knowledge base focused on their career.

Safety for the supervisor certificate

The Safety for the Supervisor Certificate is designed for individuals stepping into their first leadership or supervisory role. While participants may not carry a formal safety title, they play a critical role in ensuring safe work practices are followed and safety programs are successful.

Safety for the Human Resource (HR) Professional certificate

Certificate for Occupational Safety Managers™ (COSM) As safety professionals move along in their career path, they need training designed for a high-level safety manager. Therefore, the COSS administration has developed the Certificate for Occupational Safety Managers™ (COSM) program. All safety managers need to understand the abilities required to become great executive-level safety managers. This session, therefore, is a critical step in understanding how to progress to a higher level as a safety professional. For participants who are currently at an executive-level safety manager position, this session can assist in identifying competencies that need to be strengthened.

Pre-requisite:  Students must have a minimum of 2 years of safety, health, and environmental work experience.

Participation in the course will require the following:

certified for occupational safety specialist (COSS)

Virtual COSS® courses are offered in real-time during live classes with expert COSS® Instructors. The week-long course features the same innovative and rigorous curriculum as our in-person COSS® training with digital coursework that includes daily compliance moments and proctored exams.

Students will participate in a live 6-hour online session via Zoom Video Conferencing Monday-Friday. Live sessions being at 8:00 am CST. After each session Monday through Thursday, students can work on their own time to complete daily exercises and readings. On the final day, students will participate in an additional 2-hour Zoom session to complete final graded activities including the final exam, final compliance moment and safety presentation. (Course typically ends around 4:30-5:00 pm CST.)

The class also addresses the psychology of safety, the true cost of an accident, hazard recognition, how to start a health and safety program, behavior-based safety, and much more.

PREREQUISITES The only prerequisite for the COSS program is a high school diploma or equivalent. Each class has a mix of non-experienced, first-time safety personnel as well as safety professionals who have been in the safety field for over 20 years. Regardless of the number of years of experience you have in safety, everyone leaves the COSS® Virtual class with a wealth of knowledge!
