Excavation cave-ins are one of the leading causes of fatalities in the construction industry. Excavation safety is an essential skill for employees working in or around trenches and excavations. This course will focus on the requirements of OSHA CFR 1926.650-652 Subpart P for Competent Person and other employees working in or around trenches and excavations.
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the Standard and any data provided
- Classify soil types.
- Select and use proper protective systems.
- Recognize and reclassify soil after changes in conditions.
- Determine whether damage to excavation safety equipment renders it unusable.
- Explain the design of structural ramps.
- Explain how to determine locations of underground installations/utilities.
- Describe the importance of monitoring water removal equipment.
- Perform daily inspections.
- Determine the necessity for a protective system if less than 5 feet deep.
- Explain the process of compliance with the excavation standard.
- Explain the General Duty Clause of the OSH Act.
- Recognize and avoid hazards associated with excavation.
